Scott Adams goes Inside Out and a Geographical Oddity

Build a Habit-Robot in your Brain (from Scott Adams’ Blog) I find myself further and further fascinated with Scott’s musings, but this one was especially poignant given the number of “what’s going on inside their head” things that I’ve encountered this year (Disney Pixar’s Inside Out and Kristen Anderson-Lopez/Robert Lopez’ Up Here!).   Where the Palm Meets the Pine (from A Geographer’s Scrapbook) This was a fascinating article to read that was randomly posted in an internal work email and something I’ll have to remember to keep an eye out for next time I’m driving north!

[My Reaction To Empire’s] 40 Movies You (Probably) Didn’t Know Were Comic Books

Original Article on Empire.com So after a friend posted this article and I started reading it, I almost immediately knew I wanted to tally my scores. But then above and beyond that, my wifey and I actually started arguing about the authenticity of this list! She started questioning it at “Over The Hedge” (comic strip vs. comic book) but it really got crazy at “The Fountain” (she felt that if it was always intended to be a movie, then what’s to keep this list from saying that “you probably didn’t know that Pride & Prejudice was a comic book” (which it is)). Being a pig-headed boy, it took me a while to understand her argument, but when I finally did get it, I heartily agreed with her. But I still wanted to tally my scores, so, without further ado: the categories for scoring and the numbers on the list! Films … Continue reading →

I’m a Jim Dale Fan

I loved Pete’s Dragon growing up, then come to find that Doc Terminus also portrayed Barnum in Cy Coleman’s musical biography of Phineas Taylor was almost too much. And then he goes and narrates Pushing Daisies (one of my favorite cancelled shows of all time)! And he’s the audio book reader for the Harry Potter books? Get out. Just get out! So when I stumbled across Scott Kurtz’ tribute to Pete’s Dragon, I couldn’t help but squeal. 🙂 Every Little Piece – PVPOnline by Scott Kurtz For further enjoyment, here’s the original song that Scott is referencing.

Windows 8, Eh?

8 Things We Hate About Windows 8 8 Things We Love About Windows 8 An interesting analysis of what Microsoft is up to with the impending new release of their Operating System. Some of the “Love” features sound really nifty, but I’m very confused by this whole “Metro UI” thing….methinks I’m going to have to get meself a playground and muck about with Windows 8….

Wait…The Cost Of Oil Did What??? And Costo Did WHAT?!?!

Here we go. A straight-forward-ish explanation of what’s going on with the price of oil. So Iran is posturing and the price of oil spikes?!?! Grrr. But even more grrrr was our experience at Costco today. We pulled into the line at the Fullerton Costco gas station (which seemed fairly straight-forward for a Saturday), but soon we were engaged by a Costco employee. They told us that the back pump of each lane was Regular only and the front pump was Premium only. This effectively means that everybody (except the few who don’t want to wait in the line and get Costco employee guidance to queue up for the front pump) is waiting to use one pump per lane. The next opportunity we had we bailed because that’s garbage. As Laura and I waited for the next available opportunity to exeunt the premises, we discussed why on earth Costco would … Continue reading →

PC Magazine Daily Digest Reactions

At CES, Vendors Play Catch Up With Apple Windows 8 you say…a laptop with a detachable table you say…that’s goatee stroakingly interesting! Last Ballmer CES Keynote Light on News, Big on Windows 8 Okay. Wait a second. Ryan Seacrest was on stage talking to Steve Ballmer about what’s coming next? Why? So more “not news but hype”, but the YouTube link at the bottom about the “Josh Groban Sings The Best Kanye West Tweets”? Priceless. Google ‘Dream’ Doodle Honors Martin Luther King Jr. Beautiful as always. Murdoch Slams Google, White House Over Piracy, SOPA I have absolutely NO respect for Rupert Murdoch’s statements. I still think Fox News is “more balanced” than any other news network out there, but really the future is going to belong to the Internet so get off your Twat-box Rupy. 😉 Murdoch: News Corp. ‘Screwed Up’ With MySpace Bwahaha. Yeah. That’s pretty funny. Also interesting … Continue reading →

NCS Adds New Webcomics Division!

**ADDENDUM 2/1/2012** Took me long enough to actually find it, but I finally read Kurtz’ comic (hotlinked below) and thoughts (Separate But Equal) on the NCS Webcomics division! Hilarious and thought-provoking, as always. **/ADDENDUM** **ADDENDUM 1/12/2012** This isn’t directly related, but it is Scott Kurtz ranting about the dying model of newspaper funny pages. **/ADDENDUM** Dave Kellet, author of Sheldon and Drive, chimes in here regarding the issue. I’ll be very interested to see what Scott Kurtz, monumental webcomic advocate and author of (among other things) PVPOnline, will have to say about this…

SOPA/PIPA!!!

**ADDENDUM 1/11/12** WordPress has broken their *personal* vow of political silence to speak up about this issue here! And I’m slacking for having not visited Stop American Censorshipyet, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do something about it!!! **/ADDENDUM** **ADDENDUM 12/30/11** Oh wait, sorry that’s the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA). SOPA wants to give Congress the authority to create a new enforcement agency that police’s the Internet looking for copyright violations and giving them the authority to shutdown sites like YouTube and Facebook for “having a vauge definition of piracy” as it were. O.o Really Congress? Really? I mean sure it’s job creation, but who really wants the job of policing the Internet? Besides that job is reserved for XKCD stick figures who can’t budge from their computers because “someone on the Internet is wrong!” 😉 **/ADDENDUM** SOPA is a bill by Congress (those lovable, out-of-touch coots) that wants to … Continue reading →

A Non-Frivolous Lawsuit Against Amazon? Windows 7 Announcements? Apple Redoes Album Covers?

Kindle Users Sue Amazon Over Deleted Orwell Book – News and Analysis by PC MagazineAt first I thought this was a frivolous lawsuit, but the more I think about it, it’s really important.  Amazon may have refunded their money, but they very much did violate the users right to the device by reaching in and deleting the content…I mean the whole point of owning a device is so you can download content and keep it until YOU decide to get rid of it…not the company that created the device… Microsoft Unveils Win7 Family Pack, Upgrade Pricing – News and Analysis by PC MagazineI still think there’s too many versions of Windows, leading to confusion extraordinaire… Apple, Labels Stir Up Deluxe, Digital Cocktail – News and Analysis by PC MagazineIntriguing…most intriguing… FCC Demands Data on Blocked Google Voice Apps – News and Analysis by PC MagazineInteresting…but I can’t trust the government … Continue reading →
